The National Magazine Awards honor print and digital publications for editorial excellence. Originally limited to print magazines, the awards now also recognize magazine storytelling published on websites and apps, including audio and video, and in newspapers and newsletters. First presented in 1966, the awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and are administered by ASME.

Established by the American Society of Magazine Editors in 2018 to celebrate the historic link between literary fiction and magazine journalism, the ASME Award for Fiction honors magazines and websites for overall excellence in fiction as exemplified by three short stories. The ASME Award for Fiction is judged and presented in conjunction with the National Magazine Awards.

ASME Internship Program

ASME Internship Program

For nearly 60 years, the American Society of Magazine Editors has sponsored the Magazine Internship Program–a ten-week program for rising college seniors at magazines in New York and Washington. Since the program was founded in 1967, 2,000 college students have worked as ASME interns. Nearly 500 have gone on to successful careers in print and electronic journalism.

The ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers

ASME Editorial Guidelines


First published in 1982, the ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers articulate basic principles for the conduct of magazine journalists. The guidelines also summarize industry practices, drawn from those principles, that ensure that the distinction between editorial content and marketing messages is discernible to readers. The guidelines also include information about federal regulations relevant to magazine media.
