MICHAEL KINSLEY ELECTED TO MAGAZINE EDITORS' HALL OF FAME

American Society of Magazine Editors to Honor Pioneering Journalist at First-Ever National Magazine Awards for Digital Media Event

NEW YORK, NY (February 8, 2010)—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) is pleased to announce the election of Michael Kinsley to the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame. Mr. Kinsley will be honored at the first National Magazine Awards for Digital Media at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers on March 18, 2010. The National Magazine Awards for Digital Media are presented in conjunction with the Magazine Publishers of America conference “Magazines 24/7: The E-Reading Revolution.”

“Michael Kinsley’s long and distinguished career in print journalism would earn him a place in any journalism hall of fame,” said Sid Holt, Chief Executive of ASME, “but his pioneering work as the founding editor of Slate led the way for a generation of reporters and editors who have made the Web safe for serious thinking and writing.”

Mr. Kinsley was the editor of The New Republic from 1978 to 1981 and again from 1984 to 1989 and wrote the “TRB” column in the 1980s and 1990s. He has served as an editor at The Washington Monthly, Harper’s and the Los Angeles Times, among other national publications, and written weekly columns for the Washington Post and Time Magazine. In 2009, Mr. Kinsley joined the Atlantic Media Company and began writing a column for The Atlantic.

Mr. Kinsley is also known for his work as a television commentator, first on Firing Line and, from 1989 to 1995, on CNN’s Crossfire.  And he is the father of one of the most quotable political maxims of our time: "A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth.”

The Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame was established in 1995 by the American Society of Magazine Editors to recognize the editorial achievements and career-long accomplishments of leading journalists and honors distinguished service to the magazine industry. Among the members of the Hall of Fame best known to the public are Martha Stewart, Tina Brown, Hugh Hefner, Gloria Steinem, Jann S. Wenner and Helen Gurley Brown.

The American Society of Magazine Editors is the principal organization for magazine journalists in the United States. The members of ASME include the editorial leaders of most major consumer and business magazines published in print and online. Founded in 1963, ASME works to defend the First Amendment and preserve editorial independence. ASME sponsors the National Magazine Awards in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
